What magazine first published Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart'?

The magazine that first published Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart was The Pioneer. The story appeared in January 1843, in the inaugural issue of the short-lived Boston periodical The Pioneer: A Literary and Critical Magazine.

The magazine was associated with editor James Russell Lowell and proprietor Robert Carter. Poe was reportedly paid about $10 for the story, which presents an unnamed narrator trying to prove his sanity while describing the murder of an old man with a disturbing pale-blue eye. The story's psychological tension comes from the narrator's increasingly unstable perception of a beating heart beneath the floorboards.

The Tell-Tale Heart was later reprinted in the Broadway Journal in August 1845, which is why that magazine is sometimes mistaken for its original venue. Poe was also closely associated with the Southern Literary Messenger earlier in his career, and Graham's Magazine published other important Poe works, but neither was the first publisher of this particular story.
