What macOS utility automatically backs up your files to an external drive?

The story behind the answer

What macOS utility automatically backs up your files to an external drive? Time Machine.

Time Machine is macOS's built-in backup system for automatically creating restorable copies of files on an external drive. Once a destination is selected, it normally performs recurring backups without requiring the user to copy documents manually. Its interface also lets users browse earlier versions and recover files that were changed or deleted.

Apple introduced Time Machine with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 in October 2007. It uses incremental backups: after the first backup, later runs focus on changed data while presenting historical snapshots in a way that feels like browsing complete copies of the Mac.

Time Machine is not the same as iCloud synchronization. iCloud keeps selected data available across devices, while Time Machine is designed for local recovery and can restore individual files or, when necessary, a larger Mac installation. SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are third-party alternatives, not Apple's built-in utility.
