What machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to produce threads by twisting fibers mechanically?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a spinning machine to produce thread by twisting fibers mechanically.

His notebooks contain mechanisms for textile production, including devices intended to automate parts of spinning. These designs used coordinated wheels, spindles, and gearing to draw out and twist fibers more consistently than hand spinning could achieve.

Leonardo was not the inventor of spinning itself. Hand spindles and other textile tools were ancient, and later machines such as the spinning jenny and spinning frame transformed textile production during the Industrial Revolution. Leonardo's importance lies in applying Renaissance mechanical ingenuity to a familiar craft.

The surviving drawings do not represent one standardized machine with a single universally accepted name. “Spinning machine” is the safest description for the textile mechanism, while claims that Leonardo invented the industrial spinning jenny are incorrect because that machine was developed much later.
