What machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to make a knight move its arms and head?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, an automaton intended to move its arms and head through an internal system of gears and cables.

Leonardo prepared the design in Milan around 1495, probably for a court entertainment or pageant organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza. The armored figure was not a robot in the modern electronic sense. It was a clockwork-style machine powered by mechanical components and operated by the motion of internal parts.

The original machine has not survived, so historians reconstruct its operation from Leonardo’s technical drawings. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on those sketches. The reconstruction showed that the design could perform several human-like movements, including raising its arms and moving its jaw.

Calling it a modern robot can mislead readers, but the nickname reflects its programmable-looking mechanical motion. Its importance lies in the combination of anatomy, sculpture, gearing, and theatrical engineering.
