What machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to automate the movement of a human-shaped figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight to automate the movement of a human-shaped figure.

The automaton was developed in Milan around 1495, probably for a court pageant or entertainment. Its internal system of gears, cables, and pulleys was arranged inside an armored shell. Reconstructions based on Leonardo’s drawings indicate that the figure could perform movements such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

The machine is often described as a robot, but that modern word can obscure its historical character. Leonardo was designing a mechanical automaton, not an electronic or programmable robot. Its actions were limited by the physical linkages and controls built into the mechanism.

The knight also differs from Leonardo’s famous mechanical lion. The lion was a later court spectacle associated with France in 1515, while the human-shaped knight belongs to Leonardo’s Milanese work around 1495.
