What lyric phrase from Taylor Swift’s “august” gives the annual TikTok trend its name?

“August slipped away” is the lyric phrase from Taylor Swift’s “august” that gives the annual TikTok trend its name.

The phrase appears in the song’s chorus, where Swift compares the passing summer to a moment that disappears quickly. That image became especially suited to end-of-August posts, when users look back on vacations, friendships, romances, and ordinary memories from the season.

TikTok’s official newsroom described the trend as a montage format using saved camera-roll memories and the song’s nostalgic audio. Creators often pair short clips or photographs with the track to romanticize the summer that is ending.

The trend is not a separate Taylor Swift release or an official music video. It is a recurring fan and creator practice built around the song’s title, seasonal subject, and memorable lyric. Swift herself joined the trend in 2021, helping connect the song even more strongly with the annual August ritual.
