The Jeep Wrangler has been Jeep’s long-running flagship off-road SUV since its introduction in 1986.

The first Wrangler, internally designated YJ, replaced the Jeep CJ line and was introduced in 1986 as a 1987 model. It retained the classic Jeep formula: a separate frame, solid axles, part-time four-wheel drive and an open body with removable doors or roof panels. Compared with the CJ, the YJ added a wider track, improved handling, greater comfort and better on-road safety.

The Wrangler has continued through several generations: YJ, TJ, JK and JL. Its direct lineage is usually traced through the civilian CJ Jeeps rather than as an uninterrupted production model directly descended from the original military vehicle. The Grand Cherokee is Jeep’s flagship luxury-oriented SUV, but the Wrangler is the brand’s signature and flagship off-road model.
