What Leonardo da Vinci weapon featured several cannon barrels arranged in rows?
Answer
Multi-barrel cannon
Answer
Multi-barrel cannon
Leonardo da Vinci designed a multi-barrel cannon with several guns arranged in rows.
The arrangement was intended to let a crew fire a volley and then rotate or reposition the frame while another row was prepared. In principle, this could increase the speed of repeated fire compared with loading a single cannon after every shot.
Leonardo’s military notebooks contain several studies of artillery and battlefield machinery. His multi-barrel design is often linked to the later concept of the organ gun, a family of volley weapons with multiple small barrels. The exact construction and operation of Leonardo’s drawing were never established through a surviving working prototype.
It should not be confused with the armored fighting vehicle commonly called Leonardo’s tank. The cannon design was a separate artillery concept, not a vehicle.
