What Leonardo da Vinci war machine had a conical roof and many guns?
Answer
Armoured tank
Answer
Armoured tank
Leonardo da Vinci’s armoured tank was a conical-roofed fighting vehicle surrounded by gun ports.
Leonardo designed the vehicle in the late 15th century, probably for presentation to Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The machine had a broad, circular platform protected by sloped armour plates. Small cannons were arranged around its perimeter so that the occupants could fire in several directions.
The vehicle was intended to be moved by people turning internal cranks connected to wheels. A famous modern interpretation claims that Leonardo deliberately included faulty gears to prevent the design from being built. That claim is popular, but the surviving drawing may also reflect an error or incomplete design rather than deliberate sabotage.
The machine would have been extremely heavy and difficult to operate. It was never built or used in Renaissance warfare. Modern writers call it a tank because its armour and battlefield role resemble later armoured vehicles, although the word and technology belong to much later military history.
