What Leonardo da Vinci machine was designed to resemble a human knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s human-shaped machine was the mechanical knight.

Leonardo designed the mechanical knight around 1495 for a pageant in Milan organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza. The machine was placed inside armor and used a system of gears, cables, and pulleys to create human-like movements. It could reportedly sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The design demonstrates Leonardo’s knowledge of anatomy and mechanical control. Rather than using electricity or computers, it relied on the same kinds of mechanical transmissions found in clocks and automata.

The original machine did not survive, and historians reconstructed its operation from Leonardo’s drawings and notes. Modern replicas have shown that the surviving design can support plausible movements, although details of the original performance remain uncertain.
