What Leonardo da Vinci machine was designed as a walking mechanical soldier?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s walking mechanical soldier is known as the robotic knight.

Leonardo designed the figure around 1495, probably for a pageant organized by Ludovico Sforza in Milan. A system of pulleys, cables, and gears inside an armored shell could move the knight’s arms, raise its visor, and move its jaw. The drawing survives in notes and sketches rather than as a complete original machine.

The design was reconstructed in 2002 by roboticist Mark Rosheim, who used Leonardo’s surviving diagrams to build a working model. Later reconstructions have shown that the mechanism could produce human-like movements, though it was a mechanical automaton rather than an autonomous robot in the modern sense.

The word “robot” was coined much later, in the 1920 play R.U.R. by Karel Čapek. Leonardo’s knight is therefore best described as a mechanical automaton or robotic precursor, not a programmable electronic robot.
