What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a robot designed with a human-like armored knight form?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight was a robot designed in a human-like armored form. He planned it around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan, where it may have been intended to sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms.

The machine was powered by an internal system of cables, pulleys, and gears. Leonardo’s studies of human anatomy helped him think about how mechanical parts could reproduce movements of the body. The surviving drawings show the importance of a rigid frame and carefully routed control mechanisms.

No original robot has survived, and historians cannot confirm every movement attributed to it. In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s sketches. Later reconstructions have helped show that the basic mechanical concept was plausible.

The mechanical knight is different from Leonardo’s mechanical lion, which was an animal-shaped ceremonial automaton presented in France. Neither machine was a modern programmable robot; both were mechanical automatons designed for controlled movements and spectacle.
