What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a mechanical knight capable of sitting, standing, and moving its arms?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight was an automaton capable of sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

Leonardo designed the figure around 1495 for a festival in Milan held by Ludovico Sforza. Its armor-covered body contained a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and levers that translated movement from an internal mechanism into human-like actions.

The original machine has not survived, and historians reconstruct its operation from Leonardo’s drawings and notes. The surviving evidence suggests a limited set of mechanical movements rather than modern autonomous intelligence.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s designs. The project helped demonstrate that the mechanism could plausibly produce the movements described, while also showing how much interpretation is required when rebuilding lost Renaissance machines.
