What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a mechanical humanoid often called a robot knight?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, a humanoid machine operated by cables and pulleys.
Leonardo created the design in Milan around 1495, probably for a pageant or court entertainment organized under Ludovico Sforza. The armored figure was intended to sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw. Its internal mechanism used a system of gears, cables, and pulleys controlled by a hand-operated crank.
The design was discovered in Leonardo’s Codex Madrid in the twentieth century. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo’s drawings. The reconstruction demonstrated movements including walking and raising the visor, although it was not a modern autonomous robot.
The machine is often described as the first humanoid robot in Western history, but that label needs context. It had no electronic control, artificial intelligence, or independent decision-making. Its importance lies in showing how Renaissance mechanical engineering could reproduce selected human motions.
