What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a humanoid mechanical figure designed around 1495?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s humanoid mechanical figure designed around 1495 is known as the mechanical knight.

Leonardo prepared the design while working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. The figure was probably intended for a theatrical spectacle or court celebration rather than for warfare. Drawings show a suit of armor containing a system of gears, pulleys, cables, and levers. The mechanism could imitate human actions such as sitting, standing, moving its arms, and raising its visor.

The original machine was lost, and for centuries historians knew it mainly through Leonardo’s notebooks. In 2002, robotics engineer Mark Rosheim constructed a working model based on those drawings. The reconstruction demonstrated that the mechanism could move, although it was not a modern autonomous robot.

The term “robot” is a modern label applied retrospectively. Leonardo’s machine was a mechanical automaton: a device that performed programmed movements through mechanical components.
