What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a humanoid mechanical automaton built for a Milanese pageant?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s humanoid mechanical automaton built for a Milanese pageant was the mechanical knight.

Leonardo designed the machine around 1495, probably for festivities organized by Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Concealed mechanisms of pulleys, cables, gears, and a control system allowed the armored figure to sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms.

The original device has not survived, so historians reconstruct its operation from Leonardo’s drawings and notes. The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but “robot” is a modern label: the word itself was introduced centuries later, in the 20th century.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s surviving technical evidence. The reconstruction showed that the proposed humanlike movements were mechanically plausible, though the machine was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense.
