What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a humanoid machine capable of sitting, standing, and moving its arms?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight was a humanoid automaton designed to sit, stand, and move its arms.

Leonardo developed the design around 1495 while preparing theatrical and court entertainments in Milan. The machine was placed inside armor and operated by a system of cables, pulleys, and gears. Its movements were limited, but the concept showed how mechanical linkages could imitate parts of human motion.

The knight is often called Leonardo’s robot, although “robot” is a modern term that did not exist in Renaissance Italy. The surviving evidence comes from Leonardo’s notebooks rather than from an original machine. In the 20th century, researchers reconstructed the design and demonstrated that its mechanism could produce the described movements.

It should not be confused with Leonardo’s mechanical lion. The lion was an animal-shaped ceremonial automaton, while the knight was a human-shaped armored machine. Both are associated with Leonardo’s experiments in automata.
