What Leonardo da Vinci invention was a human-shaped automaton wearing armor?
Answer
Robot knight
Answer
Robot knight
Leonardo da Vinci's robot knight was a human-shaped automaton wearing armor.
Leonardo designed the machine around 1495, probably for a theatrical display connected with the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The figure was dressed in a suit of armor and operated by cables and a system of pulleys and levers. The mechanism could reportedly perform basic human-like movements, including sitting, standing, and moving its arms.
The robot was not an electronic machine and did not have artificial intelligence. It was a mechanical automaton powered by carefully arranged linkages inside the armored shell. Leonardo's studies of anatomy and proportion helped him explore how a human body might be reproduced mechanically.
A modern reconstruction by Mark Rosheim, based on Leonardo's sketches, was displayed in 2002. The robot knight is distinct from the mechanical lion, which was an animal-shaped ceremonial automaton made for a later French royal occasion.
