What Leonardo da Vinci invention is often called the first robotic knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci's mechanical knight is often called the first robotic knight.

Leonardo designed the humanoid machine around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was intended to sit, stand, raise its arms, move its head, and open and close its jaw through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. It was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense; its movements came from mechanical power and careful internal linkages.

The design was rediscovered in Leonardo's notebooks, especially the Codex Atlanticus. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on the drawings. That reconstruction showed that the mechanism could perform several of the movements Leonardo planned. The machine is commonly described as a robot because it imitates human actions, although the word “robot” itself was not coined until the twentieth century. Leonardo's knight therefore belongs to the history of automata and mechanical engineering rather than modern computer robotics.
