What Leonardo da Vinci invention is a famous mechanical figure sometimes called a robot?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight is a humanoid automaton designed to move through an internal system of gears and cables.

Leonardo created the design around 1495 for a pageant or celebration at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The armored figure could reportedly sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw. Its mechanisms were hidden inside a suit of armor, giving the appearance of a moving knight.

No original mechanical knight has survived, and the exact capabilities of the historical device remain uncertain. The surviving drawings and related notes provide clues, but not a complete modern assembly manual. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s plans.

The word robot is modern and was not used by Leonardo. It is applied retrospectively because the knight was an autonomous-looking machine that carried out programmed mechanical movements.
