What Leonardo da Vinci device used a screw press to transfer ink onto paper?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci studied printing-press mechanisms that used a screw press to transfer ink onto paper.

A printing press applies pressure to an inked surface, such as movable type or an engraved plate, so the image or letters transfer to paper. Screw mechanisms were especially important in early presses because they converted turning motion into strong, controlled downward force.

Leonardo lived after Johannes Gutenberg's major fifteenth-century advances in European printing. He did not invent movable-type printing, and calling every press drawing a Leonardo invention is inaccurate. His notebooks nevertheless contain studies of presses, screws, and other machines relevant to printing technology.

The press transformed the spread of books and ideas by making multiple impressions far faster than hand copying. Leonardo's mechanical interests belonged to that wider world of Renaissance experimentation and manufacturing.
