What Leonardo da Vinci design is often described as an early mechanical robot in human form?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s design often described as an early mechanical robot in human form was the robot knight.

Leonardo designed the humanoid machine around 1495 for a festival in Milan held by the court of Ludovico Sforza. The knight wore armor and was designed to sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. The internal mechanism translated rotating motion into movements resembling those of a person.

The original machine has not survived, and no contemporary account conclusively proves exactly how much of the design was built. In the 1950s, Leonardo scholar Carlo Pedretti identified drawings that helped reveal the mechanism. Later reconstructions demonstrated that the concept could produce the described movements.

Calling it a robot is historically convenient but slightly modern. Leonardo’s machine was a mechanical automaton, not an electronic or programmable robot. Its importance comes from combining anatomy, theatrical design, and mechanical engineering in one ambitious figure.
