What Leonardo da Vinci automaton was a human-shaped mechanical knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s human-shaped automaton was the mechanical knight.

Leonardo designed the knight around 1495, probably for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The figure wore armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, and gears to perform human-like motions, including sitting, standing, and moving its arms. It is one of the earliest known humanoid robot designs.

The surviving drawings do not provide a complete construction manual. In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation using Leonardo’s plans and related evidence. That reconstruction showed that the concept could produce several coordinated movements, but it was not the same as recovering the original machine.

The mechanical knight was an automaton, not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. Its actions were mechanically constrained and likely controlled by a pre-arranged mechanism.
