What Latin motto appears on the Great Seal of the United States meaning “out of many, one”?

The story behind the answer

“E pluribus unum” is the Latin motto on the Great Seal of the United States meaning “out of many, one.”

The phrase was proposed during the early design work for the Great Seal and was approved by Congress in 1782. It appears on the scroll held in the bald eagle’s beak on the seal’s obverse.

The motto expresses unity from multiple parts, a fitting idea for a nation formed from separate colonies and states. Its thirteen letters also became associated with the original thirteen colonies.

“Annuit cœptis” and “Novus ordo seclorum” are the other Latin phrases on the Great Seal, but they appear on its reverse. “In God We Trust” became the official national motto much later, in 1956.
