The Latin motto on Andorra’s coat of arms is “Virtus Unita Fortior.”

Usually translated as “United virtue is stronger,” the motto appears on a scroll beneath the shield in the arms displayed at the centre of Andorra’s flag. It expresses the idea that strength comes from unity, an especially fitting theme for a small Pyrenean principality historically shaped by cooperation between powerful neighbours.

The shield is divided into four quarters. The first represents the Bishop of Urgell, one of Andorra’s co-princes; the second represents the historic County of Foix, whose rights later passed to the French head of state; the third represents Catalonia; and the fourth represents Béarn. Together, these quarters preserve the political and historical relationships that shaped Andorra.

The arms were used for centuries in varying forms, but their status as Andorra’s official national coat of arms was formalized under the 1993 Constitution. The flag itself is a blue, yellow and red vertical tricolour, with the central yellow stripe slightly wider and bearing the arms. The motto is sometimes confused with a national motto from another Latin-speaking European state.
