What language is the word quinceañera derived from?

The story behind the answer

The word quinceañera is derived from Spanish. Its form is connected to quince, the Spanish word for fifteen, and to a feminine noun ending referring to the girl being celebrated.

Spanish-language names for the tradition include quinceañera and fiesta de quince años. Quinceañera is widely used in Mexico, much of Latin America, and Latin American communities in the United States, although local pronunciation and preferred terminology can differ.

The Spanish origin does not mean that every quinceañera takes place in a Spanish-speaking country or follows one national custom. The celebration has traveled with families and communities, and many events now combine Spanish, English, Portuguese, Indigenous, Caribbean, and other cultural influences.

Portuguese has a related tradition in Brazil, often called festa de debutante, but that is a different phrase and language. The shared age milestone can create similarities without making the terms interchangeable.
