What language is the High-elven tongue in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium commonly called?

The story behind the answer

The High-elven language in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is commonly called Quenya.

Tolkien based much of Quenya’s sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on the historical development of natural languages. In his mythology, Quenya was associated especially with the Ñoldor and the Vanyar, two Elvish peoples who lived in Valinor before and during the First Age.

Quenya appears in names, poetry, formal speech and ceremonial phrases across Tolkien’s writings. It is sometimes described as the language of the High Elves, although Sindarin became more widely spoken among Elves in Middle-earth during the later ages.

Readers often confuse the two languages. Quenya and Sindarin are both Elvish languages, but Sindarin is the principal spoken Elvish language of many Middle-earth characters in The Lord of the Rings.
