What landmark is traditionally struck at midnight during New Year's Eve celebrations in London?

The story behind the answer

Big Ben is traditionally associated with the midnight chimes during New Year's Eve celebrations in London.

“Big Ben” is the popular name for the great bell in the Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of Westminster. Strictly speaking, the tower is not Big Ben, but the bell itself. At New Year, broadcasts commonly feature the clock's chimes as London enters January 1.

The clock tower was completed in the nineteenth century as part of the rebuilt Palace of Westminster. The great bell first struck in 1859, although both the bell and clock have undergone repairs and changes since then.

London's modern public celebration also includes fireworks around the London Eye and the River Thames. These landmarks are sometimes confused with the source of the midnight sound, but the traditional chimes come from the Palace of Westminster's clock tower.
