What kingdom would a human be in?
Answer
Animal
Answer
Animal
A human would be in the animal kingdom, commonly called Animalia. Humans are multicellular, oxygen-breathing, eukaryotic organisms that obtain energy by consuming organic material, which places us among the animals.
Human classification continues through several smaller groups: phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, order Primates, family Hominidae, genus Homo, and species Homo sapiens. Our mammal classification reflects traits such as hair, mammary glands, and warm-blooded metabolism; our primate classification reflects features including grasping hands and forward-facing eyes.
A common mix-up is confusing a kingdom with a species or class. “Animal” is the everyday English name, while Animalia is the formal Latin-style name used in biological classification. Humans are also members of the kingdom Animalia even though ordinary speech often uses “animal” to mean a nonhuman creature.
The animal kingdom contains extraordinary diversity, from sponges and insects to whales and humans. Modern taxonomy is based on evolutionary relationships, so humans are classified alongside other animals because of shared ancestry, not merely because we move or eat food.
