What kind of sequel is Camp Rock 3 to the earlier Camp Rock films?

Camp Rock 3 is a legacy sequel to the earlier Camp Rock films.

A legacy sequel continues an established franchise while returning to its earlier characters, performers or story world and introducing a newer generation. Camp Rock 3 follows that model by bringing back Connect 3 and other familiar figures while adding new campers.

The film follows Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, released in 2008 and 2010. Its story is set in the same musical camp universe but centers on a new competition for a place on Connect 3’s tour.

It is therefore not a reboot, which would restart the continuity, and not a prequel, which would take place earlier in the timeline. The “legacy sequel” label describes its continuation-and-passing-the-torch structure.
