What kind of school is Pencey Preparatory Academy?

The story behind the answer

Pencey Preparatory Academy is a boarding school. Holden attends the fictional Pennsylvania school as a residential student, living in a dormitory with Ward Stradlater.

The boarding-school setting makes Holden’s expulsion especially disruptive. He is separated from his family while school is in session, and he leaves before his parents expect him home. Because Pencey handles student life away from home, Holden can take a train to New York and delay telling his parents what has happened.

Pencey is described as an elite college-preparatory institution, but Holden’s account is sharply critical. He calls attention to its slogans, traditions, athletics, and emphasis on appearances, seeing the school as another example of adult institutions that present themselves as respectable while failing their students. He has failed nearly all his classes except English.

The school is fictional, though its atmosphere has often been linked to Salinger’s experience at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Pennsylvania. Pencey should not be confused with a military academy in the novel itself: it is a preparatory boarding school, and its role is chiefly to place Holden between childhood dependence and adult expectations.
