Answer
A mechanical knight
Answer
A mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight for a Milanese court festival.
The automaton was probably created around 1495 for Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of Milan. Leonardo’s surviving notes and drawings show a humanoid figure in armor with a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and other mechanical parts. The machine could reportedly sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms.
The design is important because it treats human movement as a problem that can be reproduced mechanically. Its structure was concealed inside a suit of armor, making the machine appear like a living knight during a public performance.
The original automaton disappeared, and historians long knew it mainly through Leonardo’s notebooks. In the twentieth century, researchers reconstructed versions based on the drawings. It is distinct from Leonardo’s later mechanical lion, which was an animal-shaped ceremonial automaton.
