What kind of mechanical soldier did Leonardo da Vinci design for a Milan celebration?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robot knight, a mechanical figure intended for a court celebration in Milan.

The design is associated with a 1495 festival organized for Ludovico Sforza, Leonardo’s patron. Drawings and notes indicate that the knight could sit, stand, and move its arms through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears hidden beneath armor. It was probably intended as an impressive theatrical automaton rather than a practical worker or military machine.

No original robot knight has survived, and its performance cannot be confirmed from a contemporary complete description. In the early twenty-first century, researchers built reconstructions based on Leonardo’s notebooks, showing that the mechanism was mechanically plausible.

The invention is often called Leonardo’s robot, but “robot” is a modern label. The word itself was coined centuries later, in the twentieth century. Leonardo’s machine was an automaton: a self-moving mechanical display controlled by internal mechanisms.
