What kind of mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design in armor?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robot knight, a mechanical figure dressed in armor.

The design dates from about 1495 and is connected with festivities held for Ludovico Sforza at the court of Milan. Leonardo’s surviving notes and drawings show an armored figure whose internal system of cables and pulleys could move its arms, raise its visor, and sit or stand. It was an automaton, not a programmable electronic robot in the modern sense.

The machine was probably intended as court entertainment. Its apparent human movement would have seemed extraordinary in Renaissance Italy, especially when presented inside realistic armor. Leonardo’s work required an understanding of joints, leverage, and the way a compact mechanism could transmit motion.

The original robot has not survived, and scholars reconstructed its likely arrangement from Leonardo’s drawings. In 2002, Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation. The word robot itself was not used in Leonardo’s time; it comes from the Czech word introduced in the 20th century, so “robot knight” is a modern descriptive label.
