Answer
A humanoid robot
Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid robot for a 1495 Milanese festival.
The mechanism was an armored figure capable of several human-like movements, including sitting, standing, moving its arms, and opening and closing its jaw. Leonardo prepared the design while working for Ludovico Sforza in Milan, where court celebrations often included elaborate theatrical machinery.
The machine was probably operated by a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and a control mechanism inside the armor. No contemporary evidence proves that every planned movement was successfully demonstrated, and the original device has not survived.
The robot is often called Leonardo’s mechanical knight. That name refers to its armor and appearance, not to an autonomous artificial-intelligence machine. Modern reconstructions, including one built by Mario Taddei, have used Leonardo’s drawings to test how the mechanism may have worked.
