What kind of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design for weaving cloth automatically?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed an automatic loom intended to mechanize parts of the process of weaving cloth. His textile-machine studies show how cams, gears, and moving parts could coordinate repeated actions.

A loom holds lengthwise threads, called the warp, while a crosswise thread, called the weft, is passed through them. In an automated design, mechanical components can help raise selected warp threads and move the shuttle, reducing the amount of repetitive manual work. Leonardo's interest in such machines was part of his broader study of manufacturing and labor-saving mechanisms.

The design should not be confused with the much later power loom, which used industrial power sources and became important during the Industrial Revolution. Leonardo's drawings are evidence of mechanical experimentation and planning, not proof that he built a commercially successful automatic textile factory. His loom belongs to the history of automation rather than modern mass production.
