Answer
A humanoid knight
Leonardo da Vinci’s 1495 mechanical automaton reproduced a humanoid knight.
The design is commonly known as Leonardo’s robot or mechanical knight. It was apparently developed during Leonardo’s work for Ludovico Sforza in Milan, where court spectacles and military displays created demand for impressive mechanical devices.
The armored figure was designed to sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw through an internal system of pulleys, cables, and gears. Its movement was mechanical rather than electronic, and the machine did not possess intelligence in the modern sense.
The original automaton has not survived, so its exact construction remains partly inferential. In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim built a reconstruction based on Leonardo’s drawings and notes. That reconstruction helped demonstrate that the proposed mechanism could produce several of the described motions.
