What kind of ceremony traditionally begins a quinceañera with a blessing in many Catholic families?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass traditionally begins a quinceañera with a blessing in many Catholic families.

The religious component is commonly called a Misa de acción de gracias, or thanksgiving Mass. During the service, the celebrant may give thanks for reaching fifteen, receive a blessing, and participate in readings or prayers with family and attendants.

This tradition reflects the strong Catholic influence on quinceañeras in Mexico, other parts of Latin America, and many Latino communities in the United States. It does not mean that every quinceañera includes a Mass. Families may choose a civil ceremony, a nonreligious celebration, a different Christian service, or only a reception.

The Mass is also not the same thing as the party that follows it. A reception may include food, music, formal dances, symbolic presentations, and speeches. The religious service and social celebration are connected in many traditional observances, but they are separate parts whose order and presence depend on the family’s beliefs and local customs.
