What kind of ceremony often precedes a traditional quinceañera celebration?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass often precedes a traditional quinceañera celebration.

In many Catholic families, the birthday honoree attends a special Mass before the reception. This service may be described as a Mass of thanksgiving, because the family gives thanks for the young person’s life and asks for a blessing for the future.

The religious service is not universal. Quinceañeras are also held by families who are not Catholic, and some families choose a secular ceremony or a reception without a church service. Regional customs and personal beliefs therefore matter.

The Mass should not be confused with the reception itself. The church service is the religious component; the later gathering may include formal entrances, speeches, symbolic presentations, food, music, and dancing.
