A Catholic quinceañera may include a Mass before the reception.
The religious service is commonly called a quinceañera Mass or misa de acción de gracias, meaning a Mass of thanksgiving. During it, the celebrant and family may give thanks, receive a blessing, and participate in a formal presentation. The service connects the birthday milestone with the family’s Catholic faith.
A Mass is not part of every quinceañera. Some families hold a secular celebration, while others choose a prayer service, blessing, or another religious format. Requirements for participation can also differ among parishes, dioceses, and countries. The reception that follows may contain many of the familiar traditions, including music, dancing, and symbolic presentations.
The Catholic service should not be confused with baptism or confirmation. Those are separate sacraments with different purposes. A quinceañera Mass is a thanksgiving and blessing associated with a fifteenth birthday, rather than a sacrament that initiates or confirms membership in the Church.
