What Japanese operation followed the Pearl Harbor attack to seize Wake Island?

The story behind the answer

Operation WR was the Japanese operation that followed the Pearl Harbor attack to seize Wake Island.

Wake Island was a small but strategically important American-held atoll in the central Pacific. Japanese forces began their first assault on December 11, 1941, but U.S. Marines and other defenders repelled the landing attempt and damaged Japanese ships.

Japan launched a larger, better-prepared assault later in December. The defenders surrendered on December 23, 1941, after sustained attacks and the arrival of additional Japanese forces. The island remained under Japanese occupation until the end of World War II.

Operation WR should not be confused with Operation MI, the Japanese plan for the Battle of Midway, or Operation MO, associated with the 1942 campaign toward Port Moresby. These short code names referred to separate Pacific operations.
