What Italian sparkling wine comes from the Veneto region?

The story behind the answer

What Italian sparkling wine comes from the Veneto region? Prosecco does. It is an Italian sparkling or semi-sparkling wine produced mainly in Veneto and neighboring Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Prosecco is made primarily from the Glera grape, which was officially renamed from Prosecco in Italy in 2009 so that “Prosecco” could be protected as a geographical name. The wine takes its name from the village of Prosecco near Trieste, while its most famous production areas include Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in Veneto.

Most Prosecco is made using the Charmat, or tank, method: the second fermentation occurs in large stainless-steel tanks rather than individual bottles. This helps preserve its fresh, fruity character and generally makes it less expensive than traditionally made sparkling wines such as Champagne. Prosecco may be fully sparkling, called spumante, lightly sparkling, called frizzante, or occasionally still, called tranquillo.

A common mix-up is Asti Spumante, which comes from Piedmont and is made from Moscato grapes. Prosecco is also the sparkling wine traditionally used in a Bellini cocktail.
