What is written on the cake that makes Alice shrink?

The story behind the answer

The cake that makes Alice shrink is marked “Eat Me” in Alice in Wonderland.

The label appears on a small cake Alice finds after entering the room with the tiny door. She has already drunk from a bottle marked “Drink Me,” which makes her shrink, but then realizes she has left the key on the table. Eating the cake makes her grow dramatically instead, leaving her too large to pass through the door.

The wording is a famous example of Wonderland’s unreliable transformations: the bottle and cake alter Alice’s size, but not always in the direction she expects. In the 1951 Disney film, the cake makes Alice grow rather than shrink; the question’s wording can therefore cause confusion with the later size-changing events. Alice eventually uses other foods and objects to change size again.
