Ukraine’s national holiday on 24 August is called Independence Day.
The date commemorates the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 24 August 1991. The declaration followed the failed August coup attempt in the Soviet Union and asserted that Ukraine was an independent state. Ukrainian voters confirmed the decision in a nationwide referendum on 1 December 1991.
Independence Day has been observed with official ceremonies, concerts, cultural events, military displays, and public flag ceremonies. It is separate from Ukraine’s Constitution Day on 28 June and Unity Day on 22 January. The blue-and-yellow flag and the national anthem are prominent symbols during the celebration, which emphasizes Ukrainian statehood and national identity.
