What is the world's largest power station by capacity?

The story behind the answer

The world's largest power station by installed capacity is the Three Gorges Dam in China.

Built across the Yangtze River near Yichang in Hubei province, the Three Gorges hydroelectric plant has a capacity of 22,500 megawatts. Its 32 main turbines each produce 700 megawatts, supplemented by two 50-megawatt generators. The final main generators entered service in 2012.

The project is more than a power station. Its reservoir helps control flooding, improves navigation on the Yangtze, and supplies electricity to major population and industrial centers. Construction also displaced more than a million people and submerged archaeological and historic sites, making the dam environmentally and socially controversial.

A common mix-up is confusing capacity with annual electricity production. Itaipu Dam has sometimes produced more electricity in a particular year, but the Three Gorges Dam remains the world leader in installed generating capacity. The nearby Baihetan Dam is currently the closest major rival, at 16,000 megawatts.
