Answer
Self-propelled cart
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Leonardo da Vinci’s spring-powered vehicle is usually called the self-propelled cart.
Leonardo designed the cart around 1478–1480. Two large springs stored energy and transmitted it through a system of gears, while steering could be set in advance using a programmable mechanism. The cart was intended to travel without a person pushing or pulling it.
It was not an automobile in the modern sense because it had no combustion engine and could not be continuously powered. Its stored spring energy allowed only limited movement, probably for ceremonial or theatrical use.
A reconstruction displayed at the 2006 Florence anniversary celebrations demonstrated that the mechanism could work. The cart is often called the first self-propelled vehicle, although earlier wind- and water-powered vehicles existed in other contexts.
