Archaeological Site of Troy
Answer
Archaeological Site of Troy
The UNESCO World Heritage Site name for the ruins of ancient Troy in Türkiye is Archaeological Site of Troy.
Located near Hisarlık in modern-day Çanakkale Province, the site contains the archaeological remains traditionally identified with Troy, the city celebrated in Homer’s Iliad. Archaeological excavations revealed multiple settlement layers built over one another, showing that the location was occupied repeatedly over thousands of years.
German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann began large-scale excavations at Hisarlık in the 1870s, believing he had found Homer’s Troy. Later archaeologists corrected some of his interpretations and documented a much more complex sequence of settlements. The site’s importance comes from both its archaeological evidence and its exceptional connection with ancient literature.
UNESCO added the Archaeological Site of Troy to the World Heritage List in 1998. It is often confused with the nearby modern town of Çanakkale or with the broader ancient region of Troad; the listed property specifically concerns the archaeological site at Hisarlık.
