Pumas can produce anywhere from one to six cubs, but wildlife references commonly identify two or three as the usual litter. The exact number can vary with the mother’s age, health, habitat, and food supply.

Puma births follow a gestation period of roughly three months, or about 90 days. The mother chooses a sheltered den, such as a cave, rock alcove, or dense vegetation, and raises the cubs without help from the father.

Newborn cubs are blind and heavily dependent on their mother. Their spotted coats help camouflage them, and they begin sampling meat while still nursing. They remain with their mother for many months as they learn to travel, hunt, and avoid danger. A common mix-up is confusing the usual litter size with the full recorded range: six cubs is possible, but not typical.
