What is the two-letter IATA code for Air France?

The story behind the answer

Air France’s two-letter IATA code is AF.

IATA airline designators are two-character codes used in reservations, timetables, ticketing and flight numbers. Air France commonly places AF before its numerical flight identifier, such as AF001, although the exact flight number varies by route and schedule.

Air France is France’s flag carrier and is headquartered at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris. The airline was formed in 1933 through the merger of several French aviation companies, including Air Orient, Air Union, Société Générale de Transport Aérien and CIDNA.

AF should not be confused with an airport code or an ICAO designator. IATA codes usually contain two characters for airlines, while ICAO airline designators generally contain three letters. Air France’s ICAO designator is AFR, so AF and AFR identify the same airline in different coding systems.
