What is the transfer case model in the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon?

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon uses the Rock-Trac transfer case.

Rock-Trac is Jeep’s heavy-duty, part-time four-wheel-drive system developed for the Rubicon trim. In the JK generation, it is based on the New Venture Gear NV241OR transfer case and provides a 4:1 low-range ratio. That gearing lets the vehicle crawl slowly over rocks while multiplying torque at the wheels.

Rock-Trac is more specialized than the Command-Trac system used by many other Wranglers. Rubicon models also pair it with electronically locking Tru-Lok differentials and a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, allowing greater wheel movement and traction off-road.

A common mix-up is confusing Rock-Trac with Selec-Terrain, which is a drive-mode system rather than the Rubicon’s transfer-case model. Select-Trac is another Jeep four-wheel-drive system, while Command-Trac is the more conventional part-time system found on non-Rubicon versions.
